Sanaa recently sat down with Karen Civil to discuss the film, and the two touched on a wide range of topics, including Sanaa’s red flags when dating and what it was like to work with Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut.
Were Sanaa Lathan and French Montana really a thing?
"Kenya has all these characteristics she needs to have in her mate, but the person she ends up meeting doesn't fit a lot of that criteria," Lathan said.
"I think that's a lesson that your heart is going to fall in love with who it's going to fall in love with, and it's not necessarily what's on paper." "If you're in love and there's that chemistry, that's what it's all about.
"Let's just put it this way -- I am dating." French is currently making rounds to promote his new single "Figure It Out," which features Kanye West and Nas, while Sanaa is hard at work on an upcoming special for Fox that's set to air this fall.
When "Hustle & Flow" producer Stephanie Allain ran across a newspaper article that reported 42.4 percent of successful black women have never been married, a reality she had seen reflected in her own life, she knew she had to take the story to the big screen.
("Some of us just have to work harder to stay in the game," she says of the male-dominated industry.) While Kenya's professional life is precisely on track (she's thisclose to making partner), her love life is suffering a severe drought. Sanaa is finally forced out of her comfort zone when she meets Brian (Simon Baker), an attractive, single white blond-haired, blue-eyed landscape architect who throws her life into flux when sparks begin to fly on their blind date.
She hasn't had a date in two years, and any prospective male quickly loses points if he fails to meet the criteria on her "list," a set of characteristics she requires from her potential partner. The film focuses on a young black woman dealing with the aspect of an interracial relationship from all sides as friends and family would rather her find her own "IBM" ("Ideal Black Man"), society still isn't quite as accepting as it should be and Kenya herself struggles to come to terms with her own innate biases.
Sanaa Mc Coy Lathan was born in New York City on September 19, 1971, but was raised bi-coastal following the divorce of her show-biz parents, Hollywood director Stan Lathan and Broadway actress Eleanor Mc Coy.
You know how men like happy endings at the massage parlor (or so I’ve heard)? While I know nothing about French Montana, I have to realize that, you know what, I don’t really know anything about Sanaa Lathan, either. I think – based on her movies mostly – that she’s this seminal woman and thinker with so much to offer who is above…something. Then I took a step back…I didn’t then and don’t know a damn thing about Lauren London. She’s just pretty so I assumed she was above dating men with gold teeth in their mouth on purpose. But then every so often you read an interview where these women tell you about the kinds of men they want and you realize, either they want to live out some hood fantasy, or maybe, just maybe, they ain’t above any of this shit.
Women feel the EXACT opposite on a first date when she finds out she has to pay for her half of the festivities. I think in my mind, I view her as some sort of woman of scholarly works who walks on rose petals as a rule and would only date somebody that I think highly of, or at least not somebody that would make me question how in the hell it happened. Pretty doesn’t make anybody worthy of shit more than anybody else. Is her background one that makes it seem like she’d date a lawyer or a doctor, etc? But it turns out she likes French’s Montana and that’s okay. Maybe all that stuff women claim to want from men, he does for her.
The Bronx native appeared on the talk show this week to chop it up with the ladies about his new music and new Bad Boy Entertainment/Epic Records deal, but when he brought up a false rumor about him getting Sanaa pregnant, host Tamar Braxton put him in the hot seat. The pair caused heavy speculation that they were dating after multiple videos and photos of them partying and hanging out together continuously surfaced throughout 2015.
Sanaa fueled the fire even more when she didn't deny dating French after being asked about the rumors during a visit to 92.3 L. When questioned about the nature of their relationship she replied with, "You know, I don't talk about my personal life," she responded.
